DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

On behalf of the American Council on Higher Education and Federal Government Accreditation, I extend a warm and formal welcome to all educational institutions, faculty, administrators, and members who form part of our ever-growing global community.

At ACHEA, we believe that the pursuit of academic excellence knows no borders. Whether you represent a century-old research university or an emerging institution dedicated to transforming lives through education, you are valued, recognized, and supported within our network.

Our mission is unwavering: to uphold, promote, and advance the highest standards of higher education quality across the United States and around the world. We are committed to serving our member institutions not merely as an accrediting body, but as a genuine partner in their academic journey — providing guidance, advocacy, resources, and the international recognition they deserve.

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the value of credible accreditation has never been greater. ACHEA stands as a trusted bridge between institutions of higher learning and the federal standards that protect students, employers, and society at large.

We invite every institution committed to quality, transparency, and academic integrity to join us in this shared mission.

Sincerely, Dr. Francis Cohn Director General, ACHEA American Council on Higher Education and Federal Government Accreditation

ABOUT ACHEA — INSTITUTIONAL OVERVIEW

What is ACHEA?

The American Council on Higher Education and Federal Government Accreditation (ACHEA) is a dual-function organization operating at the intersection of federal educational policy and international academic quality assurance. ACHEA fulfills two complementary and strategically aligned roles:

I. ACHEA as a Membership and Advocacy Organization

ACHEA serves as a representative membership body working in close collaboration with federal government agencies to strengthen the framework of higher education in the United States and internationally. In this capacity, ACHEA:

  • Advocates for legislative and regulatory reform that elevates the quality, accessibility, and integrity of higher education at both the national and international levels.
  • Influences public policy through evidence-based research, strategic advocacy initiatives, and targeted programmatic outreach designed to shape the future of higher education governance.
  • Represents the full diversity of American higher education — including public and private universities, liberal arts colleges, professional schools, and all degree-granting institutions accredited within the United States — ensuring that every voice in the academic community is heard at the federal level.
  • Fosters international academic cooperation, building bridges between U.S. institutions and their counterparts in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

II. ACHEA as an Independent Accrediting Body

As a government-recognized, independent accreditation agency, ACHEA specializes in evaluating and certifying the academic quality of educational institutions and programs worldwide. ACHEA’s accreditation services encompass:

  • Schools, colleges, universities, and educational organizations seeking formal recognition of their commitment to academic excellence and institutional integrity.
  • Online and distance learning providers operating within the United States and internationally, ensuring that technology-enhanced education meets the same rigorous standards applied to traditional in-person instruction.
  • Professional training programs and continuing education institutions whose graduates require internationally recognized credentials for career advancement and professional licensure.

ACHEA’s accreditation process is built on a foundation of peer review, institutional self-assessment, and continuous quality improvement — principles that have defined credible accreditation practice for over a century.

Federal Recognition and Student Aid Eligibility

The United States Department of Education requires that all institutions participating in federal student financial aid programs hold recognized accreditation. The Department evaluates and recognizes accrediting agencies based on the rigor, transparency, and consistency of the standards and review processes they apply to candidate and member institutions.

ACHEA’s recognition within this federal framework provides its accredited member institutions with a critical distinction: it signals to students, employers, government agencies, and partner institutions worldwide that the quality of education offered meets or exceeds established federal benchmarks.

Institutional accreditation by ACHEA therefore represents more than a credential — it is a declaration of academic commitment, operational integrity, and genuine service to students and society.
